Contactless card technoloy is gaining more and more ground. A lot of companies already have implemented the NFC (near field communication) technology because of its advantages: Smart cards or transponders are extremely light and small, data transfer is fast and error-free. You only have to hold it in front of a reading device, that´s it. Many companies apply NFC technology e.g. for access control or time attendance systems already.

Our ThinPrintReader TPR-10 for ThinPrint Personal Printing is also equipped with this contactless card technology and supports many smart cards such as MIFARE or FeliCa and their standards (e.g ISO14443, etc.).

From now on SEH offers adhesive labels with the MIFARE standard for companies which already use smart cards or transponders but not the necessary standard required for using Personal Printing with our ThinPrintReader TPR-10. With a little help of these ultra thin tags you "upgrade" your existing smart cards with the MIFARE standard.

The RFID tags are flexible, malleable and incredibly economical. You don´t need to buy new sets of smart cards, you can simply enhance the cards and transponders already in use for Personal Printing, too.

Do you want to know more about Personal Printing with our new RFID tags? Just give us a call +(49) 521- 94226-29 or write an e-mail to sales(at)seh.de.

RFID (Radio-frequency Identification) has been one of the most discussed technologies, and there are many controversies regarding it. Back in the sixties RFID began to develop as a discrete technology and has spread out to many fields of application ever since. While its advocates revel in utopian application scenarios, its adversaries point towards problems of data security and privacy. We will have a quick look at how RFID works and where it is applied.

Development, History and Fields of Application

Usually the tags or transponders used by the British Royal Air Force in its airplanes for friend-foe recognition during World War II are cited as the beginning point of RFID technology. These were heavy devices the size of suitcases. Since then, they have shrunk into todays tiny and super thin RFID transponders. Their presence is so inconspicuous that it is often not noticed or forgotten by the users. RFID was originally used for securing goods (theft prevention) and animal identification in farming. Its breakthrough came in the eighties when the US and some other countries drove RFID for the use in traffic toll systems. Since then it spread out to a great number of contemporary applications. Currently the major fields of RFID application are logistics, supply chain management, warehousing, and retail where it is used alongside barcode technology. Other applications include automotive and animal identification, e-ticketing, time registration, proof of authenticity (bank notes, pharmaceuticals etc.), and access control.

Components: Active and Passive Transponders and a Reader

Technically RFID is very complex in its many details. It does not help that its components are only partially standardized. However, standardization is progressing in RFID technology and will lead to greater compatibility and unification of RFID applications. Roughly, RFID requires three components: a RFID transponder, a reader or reader-writer, and a radio frequency.

Transponders are the core of every RFID system. The term is composed of the words transmitter and responder. Depending on the RFID system a transponder consists of a microchip, an antennae, a mounting, perhaps a chassis and a power source. Form, size and equipment of a transponder is defined by the field of operation and the frequencies used. The microchip contains the data which it receives via the antennae and sends upon request.

If a transponder has its own power source, such as a battery, it is an active transponder. This does not mean that it actively sends out data. An active transponder uses its battery to feed energy to the microchip when a reader requires the transmission of data. In this way the transponder needs less field energy which enables greater ranges. When no data transmission is requested the chip is in stand-by mode und does not use any power.

A passive transponder does not have a power source of its own. This makes it lighter and lowers its production costs but shortens its range and makes it more prone to interferences.

Sometimes range pole transmitters are used. They do not react to requests but transmit their data in certain intervals, which requires them to be provided with a power source.

The corresponding reader, or writer (in case of rewritable transponders) is equipped with software for processing the data sent by the transponder. Form and size of the reader/writer again depends on the RFID system used: From a hand-held unit to a fixed large device everything is possible.

Mode of Operation and Data Transmission

In order to read the data sent by the transponder, the reader creates an electromagnetic field which contains the orders for the transmission of certain data (serial numbers, product codes etc.). The antennae receives the data and passes it on to the microchip. During data transmission the transponder does not create its own electromagnetic field but slightly changes the field generated by the reader. Depending on the frequency and the distance between transponder and reader this reading process can be very fast. Data transmission is either via full duplex or half duplex communication.

Certain materials may cause interferences which distort or impede the transmission. Depending on the RFID system water, metals or other very dense materials may cause such interferences.

Frequencies, Range and Capacity

Another important RFID component is the frequency used for data transmission as it defines the possible distances between reader and transponder. The frequency bands used are:

LF – Low Frequency:

frequency band 30 – 300 kHz

max. range 0.5 m (passive) – 2 m

frequencies allowed 9 kHz – 135 kHz

typical fields of application: animal identification, logistics, distribution, access control, immobilizer systems

HF/RF – High Frequency:

frequency band 3 – 30 MHz

max. range 0.5 m (passive) – 2 m

frequencies allowed 6.78 MHz, 13.56 MHz (smart cards, 1 m), 40.680 MHz

typical fields of application: smart cards, logistics, packets, production, automation

UHF – Ultra High Frequency:

frequency band: 0.3 – 3 GHz

max. range 3 - 6 m (passive) – 100 m

frequencies allowed 433.920 MHz 8 (100 m), 869 MHz (Europe, 2 m), 902 – 928 MHz (USA, 2 m), 2.45 GHz (2 m)

typical fields of application: EAN codes, EPC codes, automation, production, logistics, automotive

SHF – Super High Frequency:

frequency band > 3 GHz

max. range ca. 10 m (active, requires battery)

frequencies allowed 5.8 GHz, 24.125 GHz

typical fields of application: Due to the very high read rate used in applications for quickly passing vehicles (toll systems, car parks, freight cars in train stations, trucks in gateways etc.).

Prospects: RFID vs. Barcode, Future Fields of Application

RFID shares fields of application such as logistics with barcode and 2D code technologies. Experts expect this to continue. RFID will spread out to applications which require low interference and efficient processes. Unlike barcodes RFID transponder chips are writable or rewritable. For example, they can be used to transmit parameters for the correct alignment of devices and machines and their equipment. A scenario for future RFID application is cashless shopping: People walk into a shop, take the goods from the shelves, put them into their shopping basket and simply walk out again. The prices of the goods are automatically computed and deduced from the bank account. At the same time intelligent shelves order the goods to be refilled. The refrigerator at home, too, could order goods taken out or warn its owner of expired foodstuffs. RFID implants into human skin are already reality – in this case one does not even have to carry a transponder along.

While some people are enthusiastic about such possibilities, others are worried by the implications of the "transparent user" and the possibilities of using RFID for total control and surveillance. Data privacy issues include questions such as who can save what data where and how long, and the issue of "skimming" data in passing without consent or even knowledge of the user, e.g. in case of ID cards. Such controversies regarding the fields of RFID application are likely to accompany the further development of this technology for awhile.

RFID at SEH

Our TPR-10 ThinPrint Reader enables contactless user authentication at printers via RFID. This system requires the installation of ThinPrint Personal Printing, a solution by Cortado, and together these solutions provide for secure printing: Users send their print job to their printer of their choice and then release the print job at the printer with the help of a smart card. In this way nobody else can pick up the print job. All common smart cards can be used for this solution, including smart cards already in use in a company or organization. Also, our RFID labels can be used to simply "upgrade" other smart cards by adding MiFare technology so they can be used with ThinPrint Personal Printing. As a result, it is not necessary to acquire another set of smart cards for Personal Printing.

Our new myUTN-130 Scannerserver is already operating successfully at garmo AG, a German food producer.

Since the 1970s, garmo AG and its leading brand GAZi is Europe's largest vendor and producer of traditional, ethnic, soft cheese. The company offers a broad range of brands of different dairy specialties, such as soft cheese from cow, sheep and goat milk, yoghurt and cheese specialities. In addition to the internationally approved quality standards IFS and BRC, which ensure the consistent quality of all products, all garmo AG products fulfil all demands required of Halal products. The latest methods and technologies are used to ensure that the products fulfill the demands of Islamic norms for food production. garmo AG's products are certified by the only accredited and specialised company, Institut Halal Control e.K. garmo AG is an internationally operating company delivering its goods to more than 40 countries world-wide.

Stefan Greiner, IT director of garmo AG, already operates our myUTN-80 dongle server. Recently he also purchased our myUTN-130 Scannerserver.

"We wanted to make a scanner, which is attached to a PC, more flexibly available for several work stations in our company in a highly fail-safe way," he explains his investment in the myUTN-130 Scannerserver. The installation took place in two steps. "It took us only 15 minutes to unpack the device, assign an IP address, attach the Scannerserver to the Gigabit port of the switch, unplug the scanner from the local USB port and attach it to the Scannerserver," Greiner says.

After the initial installation the Scan-PC needed to be integrated, i.e. virtualized, into the existing VMware environment. Now the scanner is virtualized across the LAN and the PC is now operating productively in the VMware environment. "My colleage immediately called: This runs much faster!" a happy Greiner sums up the installation.

From this year on, it is part of Japan IT Week, the umbrella brand for several IT trade shows taking place at the same time. IST addresses IT specialists working on risk/security management, information systems, corporate planning, audit and legal affairs.

Secure USB Virtualization Solutions

At this year's IST, SEH exhibits its myUTN USB device server portfolio for accessing a large variety of USB devices across the network. This includes special solutions such as the myUTN-80 dongle server, the new myUTN-130 Scannerserver, and myUTN-120 SDCardserver, which will be introduced to the Japanese public for the first time. In addition to many value-added functions and features all myUTN devices are equipped with all the relevant security functions for the secure usage of USB devices via a network. Interested visitors can also find out about the new UTN Manager functions. UTN Manager is the software tool for the secure utilisation of USB devices attached to myUTN USB device servers.

Efficient Solution for Print Spooling in Networks

Another focus of the SEH exhibit is on the print appliance ISD300 for decentralised spooling. This appliance spools and manages all print jobs in networks where central spoolers could be operated for spooling print jobs. ISD300 offers significant savings regarding investment and maintenance costs. As with all of the ISD appliances, ISD300 is equipped with a great number of value-added management and security functions.

CeBIT has started – with sunny weather, full halls and many highlights. The first visitors explored the newest technical innovations and trends of the world´s largest and most international computer expo.

SEH has welcomed the first visitors in hall 3 at stand A24 and enjoyed many interesting conversations. We are looking forward to the next four days of the full CeBIT experience.

Even a labor strike on March, 8. will not change the positive energy at CeBIT: Deutsche Messe is appealing to Hannover's general populace to help minimize the impact of an impending strike announced by German trade union ver.di for Thursday, 8 March. The strike will affect part of the Hanoverian mass transit system ("üstra") during CeBIT.

To avoid possible issues and to get the visitors to the exhibition ground, Deutsche Messe has called on local drivers to join the "CeBIT Red Dot" campaign. Every visitor needing a ride to CeBIT can hold up a print out showing a red dot at the side of the road. Car drivers who are willing to take visitors to the Central Railway station (Hauptbahnhof), Hildesheimer Straße or the exhibition grounds are asked to display the CeBIT red dot on their windshields. With the help of the ret dot, drivers and passengers will easily come together.

You can find detailed information about the "CeBIT Red Dot" campaign here:

Scanning in virtualized environments is often challenging: Sometimes it is simply impossible to run a USB scanner in virtualized environments. In other cases network/WAN bandwidth is limited and scan data would be too much traffic. SEH offers a solution for all these issues:

The myUTN-130 Scannerserver enables the flexible and location-independent usage and management of your scanners. Make them available across the network so that several users can access the attached devices.

Moreover, Scannerserver offers scan-data compression, which can reduce the amount of data transmitted by more than a half. This relieves network traffic even in case of high definition scans.

But that is not all: Our Scannerserver is the Product of the Month!

For instance, we show you how to operate the myUTN USB Device Servers easily via the Command Line! You simply use your applications as ususal while the commands defined in the command line control the UTN Manager in the background.

We also demonstrate how you can use the Action Wizard to automatically connect and disconnect devices attached to a myUTN USB Device Server and to start an application after having activated a certain device. As soon as this application is closed again, the device will also be deactivated.

Let us show you how to use the cool Port Renaming function to rename each USB port of your myUTN USB device servers. In this screencast you can see how easy it is to assign an unambiguous name to a port and immediately see which device you want to connect.

Virtual USB Solution Enables Remote Scanner Access

PHOENIXVILLE, PA (February 21, 2012) – SEH Technology, a leading network solutions provider, announces the myUTN-130 Scannerserver, a USB virtualization solution for USB scanners. The Scannerserver connects scanners to virtual environments (Citrix, VMWare, Microsoft Hyper V etc.) and offers data compression rates of more than half of the original size. The myUTN-130 (Order# M05252) is now available for $499.99 at many online resellers.

USB scanners are generally designed to attach locally to a PC or notebook. If users need to scan a document but have no scanner, they have to ask a colleague with a scanner or they have to disconnect a scanner elsewhere and attach it to their own PC. Both methods are inefficient and time-consuming.

“The myUTN-130 Scannerserver makes USB scanners available for several users across a network, operating seamlessly as if they were attached locally,” states Mike Majewski, President, SEH Technology. “Scannerserver also offers many security functions such as access control, authentication, password protection, and encryption, protecting connected scanners and scan-data from unauthorized access.”

The IPv6-enabled myUTN-130 Scannerserver operates on all Ethernet networks including Gigabit (10BaseT/100BaseTX/1000BaseT). It is compatible with Windows 32/64 bit versions (Windows 7, Server 2008, Vista, Server 2003, XP). Regular free software updates, technical support worldwide and a three-year warranty come with the myUTN-130.

Our latest software update to version 1.4.12 has equipped our UTN Manager with a host of new and interesting functions.
We will be introducing them to you in our screencast series. This way you can see how easily you can configure and use these new UTN Manager functions.

The focus of this screencast is "utilizing the UTN Manager via the command line". This new function offers a number of benefits:

Users don't have to spend a lot of time understanding the UTN Manager. Instead, they simply use their applications as ususal while the commands defined in the command line control the UTN Manager in the background. For example, commands to connect a USB device can be embedded in a logon script which will automatically be executed when the user logs in.

Another interesting new feature is the device pool. If you have connected several identical USB devices to a USB device server, the next available USB device will be connected.

All in all these new features of the UTN Manager enable you to attach your USB devices seamlessly and effortlessly into the network.

Even if all this sounds technically complicated, the creation of commands via the command line is really easy to do.

Just watch our screencast to find out how this works:
